Dear Mr (or Ms) last name,

Start your cover letter with a statement that establishes a connection with your reader, a probing question, or a quotable quote. Briefly say what job you are applying for.

The mid-section of your cover letter should be one or two short paragraphs that make relevant points about your qualifications. You should not summarise your resume! You may incorporate a column or bullet point format here. Choose some qualifications that really target the position you are going after. Do not go overboard and save some information for the interview.

Your last paragraph should initiate action by explaining what you will do next (eg, call the employer) or instigate the reader to contact you to set up an interview. Close your cover letter by saying “thank you.”

Sincerely yours,

Your handwritten signature
Your name (typed)

Enclosure: resume

A cover letter should demonstrate to the reader that you have read the job ad carefully and that you are truly interested in that particular job. Many hiring managers will not even look at a resume that does not come with a cover letter.

The cover letter should:

  • Be to the point. Should clearly link your experience to the role being advertised.
  • Be no more than three to four paragraphs long.
  • Be positive and upbeat. Make the hiring manager interested in reading your resume.
The cover letter should NOT:
  • Be a summary or repeat of your resume.
  • Be a uniform letter you send with all job applications.
Here are some examples:

I hope to have an opportunity to meet with you to discuss how I could contribute to your team.
