English 101 Assignments

Welcome to English 101. This website contains assignments and other materials needed for the course.

Course Materials

Canvas login. Most of the material for the course is on Canvas, our new online course software. That is where you will submit assignments, find links to assigned material, and engage in any online discussions. You will need your Shoreline email account username and your student id number to log in.

If you have trouble logging in, contact eLearning at elearning@shoreline.edu or (206) 546-6966.

I'm told by the tech support folks that Canvas works best in either Chrome or Firefox, not Internet Explorer (IE). As far as I know, all campus computers have both Chrome and Firefox on them. They are free to download to your own computer as well: Chrome here and Firefox here. They are both easy to install and, in my opinion, both are superior to IE.

Course Policies and Information

  • Main ideas of the class. These nine ideas are the core ideas that every assignment in this class is designed to get across. Take them with you and use them whenever you have to write anything, whether a job letter or a philosophy paper or a report or anything else.
  • Syllabus, containing course policies (PDF file). Please note: This is the syllabus for my 10:30 face-to-face class. Students in my hybrid class that meets Mondays at 12:30 should use the Canvas classroom for the syallabus and all other course documents.
  • Expectations of students and professor
  • Homework – Grade Correlation This graph shows the relationship between homework scores and overall grades over 8 quarters of English 101. Although there is a lot of variability caused by other factors, the overall trend is clear: a 72% correlation (very high) between homework scores and final grade. People who do their homework consistently tend to do better, on average, than those who do not.

The The Writing and Learning Studio (TWLS, formerly the ASC), Room 1501

TWLS provides instructional handouts and texts, a comfortable study environment, and drop–in tutoring for students in any discipline who want to work on college reading strategies, study skills, research papers, essays, or other kinds of writing assignments. Additionally, TWLS offers variable credit courses on topics such as note–taking, memory improvement, research writing, test–taking, and grammar.

Each of the five projects from two different ENGL 1101 classes focused on the theme of culture and scaffolded students through writing arguments employing narrative details, field research, and then academic research as support.

 

Nancy Remler

The following assignments were part of a section of ENGL 1101 that was tied to a section of First Class, Armstrong’s first-year learning community focusing on information literacy. Each essay assignment focused on a theme and required students to use a different type of analysis or information literacy skill.
